Managing Anxiety About Our Summer Plans!
Переглядів 1994 роки тому
In this video, I discuss strategies for managing the anxiety and uncertainty we feel about not knowing how/when our cities will re-open. I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) by focusing on setting up goals for the near future and identifying values that can inform our long term decisions. Managing Anxiety: Facing the "It's Not the Same"
Переглядів 1844 роки тому
As we practice social distancing, many aspects of our social lives are "not the same:" We go on virtual dates, have video-based conference calls, and see friends and family from the distance. I've noticed that many of us are hiding behind this "it's not the same" as a way to avoid doing things that would normally make us anxious, such as going on dates, participating in work meetings, or spendi...
Managing Feels About Reopening
Переглядів 984 роки тому
The process of "shutting down" (going into shelter-in-place, self-quarantining, practicing social distance) was relatively straightforward: there was a threat and we felt scared and anxious and so we retreated. But, the process of reopening is a lot more complex and comes with many additional emotions. So, on this video, I discuss a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach for making room fo...

Managing worries: timeboxing technique

On this video, I discuss a very important technique for managing worries and anxiety: timeboxing our worries! By setting aside a designated time to worry every day, we gain better control over our worrisome thoughts and can lower our anxiety. Introversion or social anxiety?
Переглядів 4,1 тис.4 роки тому
In this video, I review key differences between introversion and social anxiety disorder. Sometimes the terms are used interchangeably but there are crucial differences between these: to start, introversion is a facet of someone's personality, whereas social anxiety disorder is a debilitating condition. Im an introvert and it takes a lot of energy for me to do standard group activities that have nothing to do with my interests . IE family gatherings or even phone calls . Now that things have fallen apart in my life again , I can only deal with a very small circle of close friends . Maybe Extroverts are able to re socialize quicker because they enjoy the crazy small talk ??

Most OCDs are not drug addicts and Neither should ever be treated as such because they're not! Treat all people with care and respect no matter what. That's actually the best medicine!

Thank you, I think I know what to talk about with my therapist. I think I'm a mix of both introversion with some social anxiety. Recently, I was ingratiated to attend a minor social event. Of course, I didn't want to attend, but I didn't want to be viewed as an asshole for not attending. So, I went... The fallout was devastating to me, as I started drinking heavily afterward, and took an opiate pain pill just to exacerbate the emotionally numbing effects of the alcohol. Yet, it seems to me, that the more extroverted personalities around you, want to intentionally put you in situations like this through peer pressure. I don't understand it, because it seems like they WANT to torture you!

I am an extrovert with social anxiety. My life is just frustration, worrying and sadness every single day. I am not the stereotype of extrovert like having lots of friends and going outside all of the time. I'm not like that, but I'm not originally quiet. Yes, I'm known as the quiet kid. That's not me, it's what people think I am. It's because I don't talk. I do have a lot of difficulty making friends. I do find it hard to start conversations. My social anxiety is ruining my life and nobody seems to understand it enough to let me be me.

Can you be a little.of both introvert and have social anxiety. I find myself very comfortable on my own thought more than most and its how I find balance in the chaos of the world but I do enjoy gatherings but feel like people are judging me and I compared myself to others in my head for no reason and this cause nervousness. Small talk also makes me feel uncomfortable as well . In my mind during small talk I find myself hoping it will end as soon as possible. Drinking makes is almost all go away which I know is bad but it is what it is ... When everyone is just living for the moment and enjoys life without all the akward interview small talk questions I find myself with much less anxiety or strange thoughts ....
